Interior Inspirations

“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”  Jeremiah 17:10

In Divine Mercy In My Soul, The Diary of Sister Faustina Kowalska, the Saint writes: “My soul was engulfed by the great love of God, and I understood that we should take great heed of our interior inspirations and follow them faithfully, and that faithfulness to one grace draws down others.”

One of the beautiful benefits of spending time in Stillness before Our Lord is the feeling of being engulfed in the Love of the One who created us.  Another benefit of being still before Our Lord is that we are spiritually moved; He speaks to our soul.  These interior inspirations are leadings that guide us to what is ours to do, guide us to our best selves.  And a bonus benefit is that, as sure as night follows day, if we follow these interior inspirations given to us by Him, by His Holy Spirit, we are sure to be blessed.  And, when we continue to follow these inspirations faithfully, blessing upon blessing will rain down on us.

If you are not spending time in silence with Our Lord, start by just sitting quietly with Him for a few minutes each day, in addition to your regular prayers.  Watch and see, how over time, these minutes become just as important to you as actually praying.  Be sure to also watch for the blessings that rain down as a result!

The Spirit Of Freedom

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”  2 Corinthians 3:17

Freedom is in the Lord.  This great nation, The United States of America, was founded under God.  It is indivisible with liberty and justice for all, and yet, under the guise of these very rights, this honorable nation is under siege by Satan and His operatives.  The very root of its foundation is under attack by those who seek to remove God from all things, especially those pertaining to government.

Let us pray that the Lord’s Spirit remains strong in each of us, and thereby in our nation.  Let us pray that Satan, the root of all that is evil, is defeated in the Name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior, and that the United States of America stands ever vigilant defending those rights endowed by our Creator.  Let us pray as one nation under God!

Celebrate!  Let freedom ring, and have a blessed 4th everyone!

Solomon’s Prayer

St Peter's Basilica Statuary, taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011

St Peter’s Basilica Statuary, taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011

“At Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream during the night.  God said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’  Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father.  But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership.  An here is your servant, usrrounded with your people who you have chosen, a people so numerous that its number cannot be counted or reckoned.  So give your servant a heart to understand how to gover your people, how to discern between good and evil, for how could one otherwise govern such a great people as yours?’  It pleased Yahweh that Solomon should have asked for this.  ‘Since you have asked for this,’ God said, ‘and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself, here and now I do what you ask.  I give you a heart wise and shrewd as no one has had before and no one will have after you.”  1 Kings 3:5, 7-12

In this verse we learn just how Solomon became so wise.  He asked to be!

Solomon was given a great responsibility in governing behind the likes of the great King David, his father.  He knew he had limitations and asked God to make him whole, make him wise in governing God’s people.  Because his prayer was not selfish, or self-centered, because his prayer was for the sake of others, God was pleased and answered his prayer in an even more glorious way than Solomon imagined.  God made him the wisest man ever, the wisest man on earth forever!

What can we learn from Solomon’s prayer?  The most important thing we can learn is that God is pleased to hear and answer our prayer.  Another thing we can learn is that when we pray for ourselves with good for others as our intent, God is pleased and may even answer our prayer in a better way than we could imagine.

Does this mean that we should never pray for our own wants and desires?  Not at all.  God cares about us and loves to give us gifts whenever possible, whenever it will be good for us.  So pray.  Pray for others, and pray for yourself. God loves you.  He is waiting to hear and answer.

His Word As Our Judge

520px-Shield-Trinity-Scutum-Fidei-English-001_svg“He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.  For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.  I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”  John 12:48-50

Here, in His own words, Jesus tells us blatantly that He speaks according to The Father’s commandment.  He comes to bring us Eternal Life, to both show and tell us how to achieve it.  Jesus is our blueprint for success sent to us by The Father.  He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.

The Gospels not only bring us the Good News, they provide us with directions to get to Heaven.  We have no good excuse not to follow them.  In order to do so, we must make it a priority to spend time in His Word learning the Way.

If you are not already doing so, make it a habit to read daily in The Bible, for as Jesus, Himself, puts it… His Word will be our judge.

Gnashing Of Teeth

Taken in Vatican Museum, 2012, by Martha Wiggins

Taken in Vatican Museum, 2012, by Martha Wiggins

“Then he left the crowd and went into the house.  His disciples came to him and said, ‘Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.’  He answered, ‘The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom.  The weeds are the people of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.  The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.  As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.  They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.  Whoever has ears, let them hear.”   Matthew 13:24-43

In this Gospel from Matthew, Jesus explains to His disciples, and us, the parable of the seeds sown among the weeds.

Can it be made any clearer?  The evil and all who sin will be harvested out by angels and then thrown into the fires of hell.  The harvest he describes can be vividly seen.  The weeping and gnashing of teeth can be loudly heard.

Can the contrast be any greater?  The evil get to burn in hell, weep and gnash teeth, while the righteous, the people of the kingdom, get to shine like the sun in heaven with God!

Can the choice be any easier, and yet any tougher?  It is easy to say, “Yes, I will be one of His kingdom,” but, it isn’t easy to be righteous among the evil.  At times the evil appear to have it all, to be having fun and enjoying the fruits of their sinful behaviors.  To remain good the righteous must remember how the evil will fare in the end, and must ever focus on the prize … to shine like the sun in heaven.

A favorite hymn of mine, written in 1979 by a Catholic Priest, Michael Joncas, expresses it so beautifully…

On Eagles’ Wings

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, “My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust.”

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear;
Under His Wings your refuge,
His faithfulness your shield.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day,
Though thousands fall about you,
Near you it shall not come.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
For to His angels He’s given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

Ladder To The Future

Colosseum, Rome

Colosseum, Rome, Italy, 2011, taken by Martha Wiggins

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

God Calling, by A.J. Russell, July 15th entry:  “Its supports may be out of your sight, hidden in the secret Place of the Most High, but if I have asked you to step on and up firmly–then surely have I secured your ladder.”

Are you afraid to go forward?  Do you lack courage, strength, and trusting faith to take the next step?  If so, take a moment to reflect on where you have been, and then reflect a moment on to where you have come.  This is not to dwell or wallow in past mistakes, or wrong decisions.  It is simply to realize that whatever has befallen you, you are now here at this spot, at this moment in time.  You have made it through all that was, and you are living in all that is.  Is it a perfect existence?  Maybe not.  Maybe for some it is a living hell.  Even so, do not discount that you are here, in spite of it.

Regardless of your present circumstances, now take a moment to look forward.  Knowing where you have been, and knowing what is at this moment, does the future still frighten you?  If it does, remember that God has brought you to this very moment.  He could have said enough is enough and snuffed you out at any moment of the past, but He didn’t.

God chose to keep you here.  Why?  Because He loves you enough to make you whole.  He loves you enough to send you sufferings and tribulations that bring you to Him, sometimes on your knees begging.  He loves you enough to send His Only Begotten Son, Jesus, to point the Way; for He knows without Jesus you cannot enter into Life Everlasting.

We all have to climb the ladder of life to get to Life Everlasting.  Looking back we see the rungs we have already climbed.  Looking forward we can only see our goal, God The Father.  Mercifully He spares us prior knowledge of the future rungs necessary to lead us to Him.  Mercifully He gives us Jesus to lead the Way.

You are here at this point in time.  God is your goal, and the reward is Life Everlasting.  Jesus is The Ladder, The Way.  Step up on that next rung of life unafraid.  Step up on that next rung even if fearful, for He secures your ladder.

Don’t Regret … Pray!

graveyard-set_2823473 “but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer.  Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!”  Psalm 66:19-20

In 2011 I wrote a post about the power of prayer in our personal lives, how prayer has the power to transform situations.  Today, I would like to add another dimension to the power of prayer:  the unknown, the unseen.

In that earlier post we read how we should turn to prayer when our personal lives are in of need of things such as healing, guidance, or enlightenment, etc.  And how, because it concerns our own personal circumstances, we are able to see the results, to reap the benefits.  But, what if God seems silent?  What if our prayers are not for us, but for others, and we do not see results?  What if the circumstances are so far reaching, as in world hunger or peace?  We pray, yet we cannot know or see any difference attributable to our prayer.  This kind of prayer requires trust.  It requires a belief that it is heard, and answered.  This kind of prayer requires blind faith.  It is precisely the fact that we cannot see results that makes it all the more imperative to pray.

In the May 16th entry from God Calling, by A.J. Russell, we read: “Never weary in prayer.  When one day man sees how marvellously his prayer has been answered, then he will deeply, so deeply, regret that he prayed so little.  Prayer changes all.  Prayer re-creates.  Prayer is irresistible.  So pray, literally without ceasing.  Pray until you almost cease to pray, because trust has become so rock-like, and then pray on because it has become so much a habit that you cannot resist it.  And always pray until Prayer merges into Praise.  That is the only note on which true prayer should end.”

Let us not be one who will deeply regret our lack of prayer.  Pray, pray, pray, and then pray some more!  You may never know the effects of your prayers while you are still on this earth, but, one day… you will, and not regret it.

Lord, You Are Patience

Saint Paul Outside the Walls

Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, Italy, 2012

Lord, You are Patience.

Forgive me, Lord, when I am like a stubborn child, and sometimes pull in the opposite direction of my good.  Forgive me when I rebel against the path you have laid out for me and go my own way.

Thank you, Lord, your loving care to every detail in my life.  Thank you for bringing me back when I go astray.  Thank you, Lord, for having patience with me.  Lead me on the path you have chosen.  Lead me on paths of righteousness for your name’s sake.

I know that without His patience and gentle guidance, I would forever be on the wrong path.  Without His patience and gentle insistence, I would be forever going from mistake to mistake.  He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Change Of Focus

442px-Crucifixion_026“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice inasmuch as participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  1 Peter 4:12-13

Today’s post deals with trials and sufferings, and how we must choose to embrace them.  The following is an enty from Journey Through The Stillness, my personal spiritual journal.

March 24, 2011 – Jesus has to pull my thoughts back to Him several times, finally saying to me, “Martha, child, a change of focus is needed.  Do not dwell on those things that are wrong, those things that cause you discomfort.  Be glad!  Rejoice in that you have something to offer up to Me on behalf of others.  Be thankful that they are not life threatening and do not harm others.  Bear them in My Grace, for suffering is indeed grace granted by Me to allow those who love Me to share in My pain, to alleviate some of the pain I suffered on their behalf and the behalf of all.  Understand this and your focus will be on the grace you receive from suffering WITH Me rather than the discomfort incurred as a result.  You are my daughter, Martha, and I love you enough to have you share in both My sorrow and My joy.  Turn your own suffering into joy and you will be blessed tenfold.  Love your suffering for the sake of Me.  Love your suffering for the love of Me.

(Personal thoughts – I so needed to hear this today, as I have been fighting self-serving wallowing the past few days.  I need to be jolted out of it, but oh, how He does it in such a gentle, loving way!)

Suffering with grace, even with joy, is quite a tall order for most of us.  We like to bemoan our tribulations, grouse, and play the victim.  We like the attention it brings, and feel important and/or loved when others listen and care.  Maybe it is time for us to try to suffer a little more in silence and prayer.  Maybe we can change our focus and suffer more in thanksgiving and the joy to be able to share in His pain.  Maybe we can change our focus and offer up our sufferings on behalf of others.  Can we truly love to suffer?  All we can do is try, and seeing us do so, He is sure to take our efforts and make them complete, make them holy in His sight.  Surely then, we will be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.

The Power Of Touch

“All in the crowd were trying to touch Him, for power came out from Him and healed all of them.”  Luke 6:19

It is hard to imagine what Jesus must have felt when throngs of people were closing in all around Him trying to get close enough to touch Him.  He knew who each of them were, who they really were.  He had each one’s name etched in His heart.  Love radiated out from Him wherever He went, and they followed because they ached for that love, because they longed to be healed.  And, He didn’t disappoint.  All who came to Him were healed, restored, made whole.

It is the same today as it was yesterday and ever will be.  He has our name etched on His heart.  He knows each of us as we really are.  He has already paid the price for us with His Blood.  All we need do is reach out and touch His cloak.  Jesus sees us in the crowd.  He wants us to reach out and touch His cloak.

We touch His cloak every time we think of Him, every time we pray to Him.  We touch His cloak every time we help someone else, every time we show love.  Opportunities abound!  And, when we touch His cloak, the power will come out from Him and into us; we will be made whole.  And, it is through His power within us that we will be able to stand out in the crowd proclaiming the glory of the kingdom of God!
