Sacred Heart

Saint Paul Outside the Walls

Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, Italy, 2012

Saint Alphonsus Liguori is one of the most well known and widely read authors of the Catholic faith.  He lived in the 1700s and was the eldest of seven children.  Born into nobility and at the age of sixteen went to law school.  After practicing law for eight years and losing a case for the first time, he quit the profession saying that he wished to secure the salvation of his soul.  He then entered the seminary against his father’s wishes and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1726.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori was a master of the interior life.  He wrote over 100 books, articles and sermons on spirituality and theology and was named a Doctor of The Church by Pope Pius IX.

This beautiful prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one written by him.  Enjoy…

Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and life-giving fountain of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, and glowing furnace of love.  You are my sanctuary.  O adorable and glorious Savior, consume my heart with that burning fire that ever inflames Your Heart.  Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love.  Let my heart be one with, and in all things conformed to, Yours.  May Your Will be the rule of both my desires and my actions.

Amen.

Jesus, My Lord, My Shepherd

Jesus, My Lord, My Shepherd, never let me say or do anything to lead your sheep astray.  Never let me betray this trust you have so lovingly placed in me.  By the love of your Sacred Heart within me help me to be a force of love and praise, a force of mercy and forgiveness in your army of eternal salvation.  Never let me forsake you in what is mine to do, ever leading souls home to our God and Father.  Amen.  (Journey Through The Stillness, July 11, 2010)

It is my greatest desire to lead lost souls to Jesus, My Lord, My Shepherd.  I ever pray that I will never lead anyone astray or presume that I deserve any credit for what Jesus does through me.

I remain humbled and in awe.  I remain one of His sheep.  I invite you to be also.  I am no priest, minister, nun, or saint.  I am a lay person entrusted with a message of Truth, a message of Life.  I have been commanded to share His Love that others might know Him fully; that others might know and understand His sacrifice for them.  His arms are open wide.  His mercy and forgiveness are endless.  You cannot escape Him unless you make a conscious choice to do so.  Look in your heart, He is there… waiting.

The Apostles’ Creed

520px-Shield-Trinity-Scutum-Fidei-English-001_svg      The word creed is defined as a statement of belief.  As a Catholic, and as many Christians do, I believe in the Blessed Trinity, that God is three distinct persons in one.  The beautiful prayer, The Apostles’ Creed, is based on our belief in the Trinity.  At the start it firmly avows that God is our Father, and the creator of all.  Next the prayer affirms that God The Son, Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, is our Savior.  This part of the creed tells the story of our redemption from beginning to end.  Then the prayer continues on attesting to the Holy Spirit who is the breath of life in each of us, who shows us the way to sanctification of our souls, that we may one day be resurrected into everlasting life.   This prayer states truths as taught by Jesus Christ and handed down by the Apostles.  If you pray and believe what you pray within it, then you own your faith…

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and Earth
And in Jesus Christ
His only Son, Our Lord
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit
Born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate
Was crucified, died and was buried.
On the third day, he rose again
He ascended into Heaven
and is seated at the right hand
of God, the Father Almighty.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the Communion of Saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Lord, You Are Love

Lord, You are Love.

Forgive me, Lord, when I fail to love others as You do; when I fail to see You in all.

Thank you, Lord, for loving me even though I am most unworthy.  Forgive me my many transgressions, especially those against the ones I love.

Loving others isn’t always easy.  Jesus has provided us with many examples of perfect love, of how we should love others.  When we read about the life of Jesus in the Gospels, we learn about His perfect love.  Our love may not be perfect, but He sees and cares about our efforts, not the outcomes.

Cursed Or Blessed?

“Thus says the LORD,
‘Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
And makes flesh his strength,
And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
For he will be like a bush in the desert
And will not see when prosperity comes,
But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
A land of salt without inhabitant.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
And whose trust is the LORD. For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:5-8

We are in this world but not of this world.  We are eternal beings created by God, The Father, redeemed by Jesus Christ, The Son, and guided by the Holy Spirit.  We are human, and while we are not both human and Divine like Jesus, we are created in the image and likeness of God.  Our goal is Life Eternal shared with The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Life on earth is but a single page in the story of our personal eternity.

As creatures of flesh and blood, God endowed each of us with a free will.  In that free will we can choose to turn away from all that is God and choose to place our trust in all that is man.  In doing so we are cursed.  We will not prosper and we will live in the stony wastelands.  However, in that same free will we can also choose to place our trust in all that is God and be blessed.  In doing so we will be as a tree with roots by the stream, never fearful of drought and never ceasing to yield fruit.

Choose God or man: created, redeemed, and guided; or created, exiled and barren.

“Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight— we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”   2 Corinthians 5:6-10

Love Is…

3c20016r Library of Congress Sacred Heart Image1 Corinthians 13

New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)

1 Corinthians 13

1 Suppose I speak in the languages of human beings and of angels. If I don’t have love, I am only a loud gong or a noisy cymbal. 2 Suppose I have the gift of prophecy. Suppose I can understand all the secret things of God and know everything about him. And suppose I have enough faith to move mountains. If I don’t have love, I am nothing at all. 3Suppose I give everything I have to poor people. And suppose I give my body to be burned. If I don’t have love, I get nothing at all.

4 Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others. It does not brag. It is not proud. 5It is not rude. It does not look out for its own interests. It does not easily become angry. It does not keep track of other people’s wrongs.

6 Love is not happy with evil. But it is full of joy when the truth is spoken. 7It always protects. It always trusts. It always hopes. It never gives up.

8Love never fails. But prophecy will pass away. Speaking in languages that had not been known before will end. And knowledge will pass away.

9 What we know now is not complete. What we prophesy now is not perfect. 10But when what is perfect comes, the things that are not perfect will pass away.

11When I was a child, I talked like a child. I thought like a child. I had the understanding of a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

12Now we see only a dim likeness of things. It is as if we were seeing them in a mirror. But someday we will see clearly. We will see face to face. What I know now is not complete. But someday I will know completely, just as God knows me completely.

13 The three most important things to have are faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love.

Faithful Love Is Priceless

“How priceless your faithful love is!  Important and ordinary people alike find safety in the shadow of your wings.”  Psalm 36:7

Most of us are ordinary people without fame or fortune.  Isn’t it comforting to know that God loves us whether or not we are important in the eyes of the world.  In His eyes we are important!   It is also comforting to know we can abide in the shadow of His wings ever finding both love and safety there.

Start and end each day in thankful praise to our God who’s faithful love is priceless!

Screaming Ninny

“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous–to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  Luke 1:17

In a previous post about pets, I shared a favorite quote of mine by Alfred Lord Tennyson, “God gives us love.  Something to love He lends us.”  It doesn’t just apply to pets.

As a mother with three young children, I would sometimes lose patience with them.  The more frazzled my nerves, the less patience I had.  It didn’t mean I loved them any less.  It just meant the 24/7 routine was taking its toll.

Whenever my same old methods weren’t working, I would search out new ways.  I would read everything I could get my hands on about parenting, and I would pray to God to not let me become a screaming ninny!  When I lost it, and found myself yelling at them in frustration, I would shake up the routine.  We would head out to a local park or one of many parks in the surrounding communities.  We came to know the parks quite well!  If a park wasn’t possible, I would make funny face sandwiches and we would spread a quilt out under one of the trees in our own yard for a picnic.  The point is that the routine had to be shaken up to get us out of the routine!  And then, my frazzled nerves would turn into enjoyment of my children instead.  It was a win/win situation.

Sometimes, however, a little righteous yelling is a good thing.  I remember an incident that demonstrates this perfectly.  My middle child was in kindergarten, attending a Catholic school.  He had been learning about God both at home and at school.  He was just smart enough to use his knowledge to his advantage, or so he thought.  To this day I cannot remember what exactly he had done, but I was not a happy camper.  I raised my voice and was letting him know I didn’t appreciate his behavior.  He stood there looking up at me with those precious blue eyes and said, “Would God want you to be yelling at your son this way?”  I nearly burst out laughing.  After all, he was only five, and he was just so cute and innocent looking!  But, I didn’t miss a beat.  I said, “Yes, He would, because He gave you to me to raise for Him!”  I went on to explain to him that, while I loved him, he was my responsibility, and that I must answer to God for how I raised him.  He seemed to accept my answer.  We hugged, and then I went into the next room so I could laugh!  After that, I always expected him to grow up and become a lawyer.  Instead, he is an accountant, but he sure can argue his point convincingly whenever its needed!

If you have the responsibility of some little one’s character development, don’t let them bully or shame you into letting them behave badly.  But, do explain to them why you can’t let that happen, and pray to God.  Pray for Him to guide you, and not let you become a screaming ninny.  You’ll need all the help you can get!

Lord, You Are Creator

Lord, You are Creator.

Forgive me, Lord, for judging that which I did not create, thereby, having no knowledge of its inner workings.  Forgive me, Lord, for taking your creations for granted, thereby, not treating them with the respect and care they deserve.

Thank you, Lord, for the intricacies of each one of your creations.  Teach me to value and care for each in its uniqueness.

Do not view the world and all of God’s creatures as your stepping stones, or as your doormat.  Instead, see this world and all in it as your threshold to the next world… Eternity with your Creator.  Treat all of creation with the deserved respect endowed by its Creator.  Value life, and in doing so, you will be more likely to cross the threshold into Eternal Life.

Moment By Moment

Ephesus, Turkey taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011

Ephesus, Turkey taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011

“And do this, understanding the present time:  The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”  Romans 13:11

Today’s post is an entry from my Journey Through The Stillness (my personal spiritual journal).  It is the first entry after a beautiful trip to Rome, Greece, and Turkey.  The most important message I came away with?  We are here now, in this moment in history.  It is our time to live… moment by moment.

June 14, 2011 –  I enter The Stillness not quite sure of what to expect after being away.  I ask if He is there, prefacing it with, “Lord, I really need to know for sure.  Are You there?”  Once in The Stillness, Jesus tilts my face up to Him and says, “Child, child.  I have given you many seeds of knowledge while you traveled.  Though you were unaware, many will come to light as you go forward.  The seeds are planted, the wisdom will come with time, and as needed.  The first one you have already discerned is about the moments.  Do not fret or worry about the rest.  Live IN Me, in each moment, in Peace, Love, and Joy.  Remember, the moments are Life.  It is the sum of the moments that add up to Eternal Life.  It is only necessary to live each moment one at a time, regardless of the moment before, regardless of the moment to come.  The present moment is the One you have.  I, and The Father, are present in each.  So Live, So Love.”

(Personal thoughts- On my trip to Rome, Greece, and Turkey, my prayer life and routine were totally thrown off balance.  While I was not aware of an imparting of any wisdom to me, I did have a continual inner hunger to see, to know, to understand many of the very moving, faith-filled, holy places I visited.  I came away with a sense of connection in Spirit to all that has gone before me; a connection to the continuation of all that is God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit.  I await with excited anticipation the understanding that is to come.  I await to serve Him as only He knows I can.)
