Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, our hope.  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!  Pray for us O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.  Amen.

The month of May is devoted to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and our Mother in heaven.  As descendants of Eve, we too are banished from the Garden under the stain of original sin on our souls.  Through Mary, who delivered to us our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we are welcomed back.  As any mother who loves her children, Mary will always intercede when asked and go to bat for us.  She will take our hopes, desires, dreams, and prayers and present them in her loving hands to Jesus on our behalf.  She is our loving advocate.  Pray to Mary always, but also especially during the remainder of May.  Seek her intercession for special intentions for yourself and those you love.  And, as any son who has a good and loving relationship with his mother, Jesus will find it difficult, impossible to deny her requests.

Remember, Mary served as the portal for Jesus, God made man, to enter into our physical realm.  Now, Mary serves as the portal for all of our prayers to enter the spiritual realm of the Sacred Heart of her Son, Jesus.  Use her.  Let Mary, the Holy Queen, be your personal advocate.

The Mary, Mary Month of May!

The month of May is a month of devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Mary was called upon by God to serve all mankind as the vessel that delivered salvation to the world.  Christ came through her to us, and we can go through her to Him.  Devotion to Mary is honoring her as His Mother.  As our Mother, she is ever willing to bring our petitions before Him in the special way that only a mother can.  Mary also serves as a perfect role model of how to faithfully serve our God, trusting in His outcomes.   We should all strive to be like Mary…

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
… and holy is his Name.He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.

(Lk 1:46-55)

Erroneous Opinions

“The Jews gathered round him and said, ‘How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense?  If you are the Christ, tell us openly.’  Jesus replied:  ‘I have told you, but you do not believe.  The works I do in my Father’s name are my witness; but you do not believe, because you are no sheep of mine.  The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.  I give them eternal life; they will never be lost and no one will ever steal them from hy hand.’  (John 10:24-28)

Lost souls, whether living or dead and suffering in Purgatory, cause my heart to weep.  We all know people who, through their own choices and actions, are truly lost.  They know the Truth; they choose not to live it.   For them we can pray and lead by example, hoping they will one day come to the realization they have turned their backs on Jesus, their Lord and Savior, and return to him in repentance.

Then there are those souls who are lost because they have never even heard of Jesus, of His saving grace and Resurrection.  They cannot be at fault when no one has ever taught them the Truth.  Each human, however, has an intrinsic need, a deep desire to find meaning for his own life.  His heart longs for God.  For these souls we not only pray they find Jesus, but we are obligated as Catholics and Christians to bring Jesus to them.  We might preach, teach, provide materials for sharing Him, or send gifts of money within our financial means.  It is these souls that we can truly assist with our prayers and aid.

The souls that truly tug at my heart are those that may have heard the Truth at one time, but it somehow took root in the wrong way.  These souls have been misled, or have been deceived by erroneous opinions.  Their incorrect beliefs and attitudes keep them at bay, keep them aloof, and they cannot be convinced that what they perceive to be the truth is not the Truth.  These are the souls that say red when you say blue, the souls that can argue you into the ground and not bat an eyelash!  In fact, these souls like nothing better than to fluster you, or silence you for all to witness.  They are often smug with a better than thou attitude in their interactions with others.  In their erroneous opinion they think they know it all!  If you know any such souls, then you know exactly what I am talking about.  We must all lift them up in prayer continuously, for only Jesus can turn their hearts around.  We must also never cease bringing Jesus to such souls through the witness of how we live our own lives.

If you have heard Jesus’ voice in your own heart then you are one of His sheep.   You must share Him.  He weeps over the loss of even one soul.  Jesus needs us to be Him in our earthly world for He longs to see us all in Heaven sharing in Eternal Life with Him.

“Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.”  (from prayer entitled Act of Consecration.)

Lord, You Are Risen Joy

Lord, You are Risen Joy.

Forgive me, Lord, when I choose to focus only on the darkness of death.  Forgive me for hiding in its shadow.

Lord, let me walk through this day in the shadow of Your loving mercy and forgiveness, yet, in the Light of Your Resurrection and Everlasting Joy.

Amen.

God Our Refuge

“My soul, be at rest in God alone,  from whom comes my hope.  God alone is my rock and my salvation, my secure height; I shall not fail.  My safety and glory are with God, My strong rock and refuge.  Trust God at all times, my people!  Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!”  Psalm 62: 5-9

Let God be your refuge to whom you run in times of trouble.  No earthly being can love you as much as He who formed you in your mother’s womb, as much as He who created you, as much as He who breathed life into you.  No trouble is too big, or too small, to take to God.  His love is strong, patient, merciful and forgiving.  His love is infinite.  His love is eternal.  Run to Him, fall on your knees before Him in repentance, and then, in praise and thanksgiving, offer yourself to Him.  Your safety and glory are with God alone!

Return, Repent, Rejoice!

I say unto you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine righteous persons, who need no repentance.  (Luke 15:7)

Such hope does this verse in Luke provide for a sinner!  We all know those who seem to live perfect lives, for whom everything always goes right, or seem to never do any wrong.  It may look that way, yet if we look closer, we may find all is not as it seems.  There is not one of us without sin.

When Jesus spoke these words He was leading up to the parable of the prodigal son, who even though he had it made, so to speak, desired to leave and find greener pastures.  After finding the grass on the other side of the fence not to be quite so green and life to be quite hard, he rued the day he left his sweet life and longed to return.  Upon returning, he at once apologized to his father for his wandering and squandering ways.  Accepting his son’s apology, the father threw a huge celebration to welcome him back into the family.

The same can be true for any of us sinners.  If we recognize our own sinful behavior and return to Jesus we will be forgiven.  At the foot of the Cross, Jesus will welcome us home, welcome us back into His family, our family, and all of heaven will rejoice!

Don’t let sinful behavior keep you from returning home.  Jesus is waiting to welcome you, nay more than that, Jesus is searching for you, His lost sheep, His prodigal child.  The party is planned, it only needs you, the guest of honor.  Return, repent, rejoice!

Gifts Of The Spirit

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.  (2 Corinthians 13:14)

Would you like to receive seven gifts?  There are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.  They are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.  When received, these gifts help strengthen those virtues we already have.  The following prayer helps us to ask for each one of these gifts that we might be strengthened along our own faith journey, armed with all which is necessary to obtain Life Eternal…

The Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven, didst promise to send the Holy Ghost to finish Thy work in the souls of Thy Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my soul the work of Thy grace and Thy love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal,

the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Thy divine truth,

the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining Heaven,

the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with Thee, and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation,

the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints,

the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable,

the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God, and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Thy true disciples and animate me in all things with Thy Spirit. Amen.

Elusive Pot of Gold?

Ever looking for that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

A rainbow is made by colorless light passing through droplets of water allowing us to see it in the physical sense and realm of the colors produced.  When light shines on an object it can be either absorbed or reflected back.  Water, however, allows light to pass through it while reflecting it back.  This is not meant in any way to be a scientific explanation, but rather an observation and thoughts.

With these thoughts in mind, let us think about the pot of gold that is supposed to be at the end of every rainbow.  If it exists, it is absorbing the light that passes through the droplets of water that form the rainbow.  In absorbing the light it begins to take on a glow of its own until it shines brightly for all to see.  And yet, few ever find that pot of gold.  Maybe they are blinded by its light.  Maybe they just aren’t looking hard enough.  Maybe the colors of the rainbow are blocking its reflection!  For whatever reason that pot of gold remains elusive.

We can look and look for that pot of gold, but until we are able to remove our blinders, or until we want it so bad we are willing to give up everything for it, we will not find it.  Until we are able to let the light pass through us while reflecting it back, the colors of the rainbow will block its beauty from us.

Does this all seem a little confusing?  Try picturing the rainbow as the world, the droplets of water as mankind, the light as Jesus, and the pot of gold as heaven.

In honor of His Crucifixion and His Ressurection … To those of you who are constantly looking for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, IT IS IN HEAVEN, and THE RAINBOW STARTS AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS.

Start in prayer, or silence, at the foot of His Cross.  Absorb His Light so that you can begin to glow reflecting it back to others.  Your reward will be great.  Your reward will be the gold lined streets of heaven!

Every Which Way But Loose!

This is a re-post from April 2011…

“The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:  ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”  Jonah 1:1-2

In the Gospel story of Jonah and the big fish, we see that the Lord has personally called on Jonah to carry out a mission.  The mission is not an easy one by any means.  Jonah must travel to Nineveh and proclaim its destruction if the city does not turn away from its evil ways!  Imagine Jonah’s fear, doubt, and skepticism toward the entire undertaking.

Like many of us Jonah reacts rather than trusts.  He runs as far as he can in the opposite direction by hopping on a boat to Tarshish, which is half way around the world.  Maybe he thought the Lord wouldn’t find him there.

“Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.  All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god.”  Jonah 1:4-5

When the LORD wants you to go one way and you go another it is not the end of the matter.  You may think you are turned loose, but He will have His way with you until you decide to go His way!

“Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”  Jonah 1:17  In the fish, Jonah realizes his folly and cries out to the Lord.  “He said, ‘In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me.  From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.”  Jonah 2:2

“And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.”  Jonah 2:10  On that dry land, Jonah commits himself to the Lord’s mission and goes to preach salvation in Nineveh.

Jonah could have saved himself a lot of tribulation had he answered the Lord’s command in the first place.  So can we.  However, like Jonah, we often run as far as we can in the opposite direction and try to hide when the Lord asks us to do something hard, or something outside of our comfort zone.  I have learned that the more I resist, the harder everything becomes.  But, also like Jonah, when we realize our folly and turn back toward the Lord, we find the strength and courage to do as He commands.

His Mother, Mary, Was There

Near the cross of Jesus there stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  Seeing his mother there with the disciple whom he loved, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, there is your son.’  In turn he said to the disciple, ‘There is your mother.’  From that hour onward, the disciple took her into his care.”  John 19:25-27

The following is from Journey Through The Stillness (my personal spiritual journal shared on Facebook.)  This fits in perfectly with Lenten meditation on the Passion of Jesus.  Mary was there…

Mar 30, 2010 The Stillness Is Mary’s again.  Her Son has gone off to pray.  Mary knows danger is looming.  She has a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach.  She knows some of His followers are with Him and hopes they will keep Him safe.  They do not.  She hears He has been arrested and races to where they have taken Him, her heart pounding wildly.  She hopes for a glimpse of Him, and that He might see her, knowing she would do anything possible to relieve Him of this destiny, even take His place.  She sees a crowd gathering and knows instinctively that He is there.  Pushing through the back of the crowd she gets close enough to see.  There He is, her Son!  Her heart stands still. He is tethered to a post.  His slumping body is bloodied and beaten.  Through silent sobs she watches as the inhuman torture continues.  Each wielding of the whip brings a new torment, another tear in His precious body, more blood.  She longs to cry out, but doesn’t.  She wants all eyes on Him to bear witness to His pain and suffering, to remember for always, to remember for all mankind.  Then she sees the Crown.  As they place it on His head and press down to secure it, to inflict unfathomable pain, her head reels and her legs begin to give out from under her.  “No, No,” she says, and forces herself upright.  She must see; He is her Son.  They have spat on Him and given Him a reed to hold.  They are mocking Him.  She feels such anger rising within her and she knows she cannot act on it.  She can do nothing!  They lower the Cross onto His shoulder.  She sees Him falter under the weight.  Her heart cries out to God, “Help Him.  If You truly love Him, help Him!”  She sees the blood from the Crown of Thorns streaming into His eyes and down His face.  Her heart cries out again to God.  “Help Him!  Can’t someone at least wipe His face!”  She follows in the crowd, at times racing ahead, trying to place herself along the roadside to be there when He passes by.  “Let Him see me, God.  Let Him know I am here.”  She witnesses Simon, the Cyrenian, being forced to help Him, and sees His face being wiped by a woman.  At once she knows God has heard and answered her pleas.  She knows her Son is in God’s hands.  Her pain for her Son is enormous, unbearable, but she knows she will bear it, and so will He, for it is God’s will, and His will must be done.  She continues on to Golgotha.  Her heart is waiting, waiting for it to be over.

(See below for Journey Throught The Stillness entry of Mar 22, 2010 for the completion, yet actually written before.)

Mar 22, 2010 – The Stillness is Mary’s.  We are together at the foot of the Cross.  Jesus is gently laid down on the Cross and removed.  It is a horrible tormenting pain for her to watch as they remove the nails and lift Him from the Cross.  This is her SON, whom she gave birth to, and whom most of the world knew nothing about.  Yet, for those who did, there was great promise.  She keeps saying, “It is finished now; He is free.”  They take Him to the tomb and place Him on her lap while they make ready.  She looks upon His face with such tenderness and sorrow.  She cannot take her eyes away from Him, lest she forget.  They take Him again.  They are ready for her.  She begins the wrapping, slowly, gently.  She kisses both of His cheeks and, quietly racked with sobs, she covers Him with the shroud.  She looks up to God and says, “I send Him back to you, O, God, in order that your promise will be fulfilled, but I am empty now.”  Then, we leave.  Mary goes off to mourn and wait.  The Stillness is over.  I have been told to write this down.

O, Mary, you gave up all for us, that we might live.
