Proclaim The Lord Christ

Colosseum, Rome

“Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you have.  But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.” 1 Peter 3:15-16

In this Gospel Peter asks us to be prepared to explain our faith.  Most of us know what we truly believe in our hearts, but putting our reasons into words that can convince someone else is a more difficult task.

Spending time in His Word, in the Bible, is essential to knowing the whats and the whys of our faith.  The more time spend with Him the more solid our foundation of faith, the easier to put it into words.  As we spend more time with Him in His Word we begin to become more and more like Him.  It becomes second nature to share Him with others.

Proclaim the Lord Christ!  Speak from your heart.  Be respectful of the faith walk of others.  Christ will meet them right where they are.

In Stillness God Reveals Himself

mossel-bay_2512789“Be still, and know that I am God!”  Psalm 46:10

Today I am sharing an entry from a daily devotional called Daily Word.  The entry is from March 29, 2011.  I hope you find it inspiring or helpful in some way.

“If I am feeling burdened by life’s circumstances, I choose to become still.  Turning inward, I affirm God’s presence in me and all around me.  While it may be easy to see divinity in a serene sunset or a newborn baby, I know that God is present in the difficult experiences of life also.  Through stillness and silence, I become present to the Divine in me.  I know that all is well.  When the mind and heart are still–when I no longer allow my thoughts to rest on external concerns–God is revealed.  As I release my needs to God, I am comforted.  I am led out of turmoil into peace.  As my worries transform into peace of mind, I become a sanctuary for others.  My influence is calming and comforting.”

Seasons of Beauty

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”  Ecclesiastes 3:11

There is nothing without God.  There is nothing that does not have its beginning in God, and its ending.  We live as a creation of God.  We live because He breathed life into us and made us in His image and likeness.  We are each beautiful, and our beauty reflects His beauty.  “I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.”  Ecclesiastes 3:14

Because we are a reflection of His beauty our inner being cries out to be one with Him.  We seek Him, even without knowing,

for He has set eternity in our hearts.  Throughout the seasons of our lives we grow in longing for our life with Him.  In everything there is order.  His order, His timing.  Knowing these things helps us to let go, and let God.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:  a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”  Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Of God

graveyard-set_2823473“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.  Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.”  Psalm 102:12-13

The transgressions of humanity as a whole are tremendous.  Among them are abortion, incest, rape, murder, slavery, starvation, and genocide.  And yet, God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy continues to forgive us.  He continues to love us.

If our own family members, our own children and the people we loved committed such atrocities against each other over and over again, most of us would have given up and given in long ago.  We would turn, walk away and never look back.  But our God is an awesome God, compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love for His children.  And, we are His children.

In John 1:12-13 we read, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”  Not of man, but of God.

We are each of God, and because we are His children, He separates his feelings about us from His feelings about our transgressions.  He loves His children; He abhors their sins.  In this way He is able to treat us with compassion, to hold our transgressions as far away from us as east is to west.  He will hold us accountable on the final judgement day, but to those who fear Him, those who receive Him, there will be mercy.  He will call them His own.

Run from your transgressions straight into your Father’s compassionate arms.  Receive Him as your Lord and Father, and let Him call you His own.

Lord, You Are Humility

Lord, You are Humility.

Forgive me, Lord, for my many sins of self-centeredness, selfishness,  self-righteousness, and pride.  Especially forgive me when I let another’s needs go unmet to satisfy my own personal desires.

Thank you, Lord, for your example of compassionate living, or living outside oneself in order to serve others.  Help me to be that humble.

When we are self-serving, we are really self-defeating.  It is only in serving others humbly that we can truly be self-serving.

His Love Endures Forever

Banff National Park, taken by Martha Wiggins, 2010

Banff National Park, taken by Martha Wiggins, 2010

“Give thanks to the God of heaven.  His love endures forever.”  Palm 136:26

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
            His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
            His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
            His love endures forever.

4 to him who alone does great wonders,
            His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
            His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
            His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights—
            His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
            His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.   (Psalm 136:1-9)

It is always wise to stop and reflect on the goodness of God.  Praise and thanksgiving go hand in hand and must be an intrinsic part of our daily prayer routine.  The Psalms are a beautiful place to find prayers of thanksgiving and praise in the Bible.  Even when we don’t feel as if we have much to be thankful for, we can find a Psalm such as the one above about creation and His enduring love to prove us wrong.

God is good.  He loves us and will continue to do so forever.  Be humble.  Be thankful.

Own It

Ruins at Corinth, Greece, 2012, taken by Martha Wiggins

Ruins at Corinth, Greece, 2012, taken by Martha Wiggins

“and they said to the woman, ‘Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heard him ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.”  John 4:42

Do you believe?  If so, why do you believe?  If you don’t believe, then why not?

Belief in God, in Jesus, in The Holy Spirit does not come easy for some people.  For some the concepts are too thought provoking.  They don’t ever take the time to examine their thoughts and feelings.  For others belief in God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit is too restricting.  They do not want to be held accountable.  Still others have issues.  They feel life has mistreated them and refuse to believe in a God who they feel has hurt them.  And then there are those who say there is no real proof of His existence.

Those who believe also have many reasons for doing so.  For some it is a belief system they were born into and never questioned, never owned for themselves.  Some believe because others believe, or because others, whom they respect have told them what to believe.

In today’s Gospel, the woman at the well believes because Jesus, whom she has never met, can tell her whole life’s story.  She has heard of Christ who is to come and who will be able to explain everything.  She asks Him about this.  Jesus says to her, “That is who I am, I who speak to you.” (John 4:26)  The woman then hurries back to the town and tells everyone what she has learned.  At first the people believe because of what she tells them.   After they go and hear Jesus for themselves, they believe on the strength of what He tells them.

God calls on you to own what you believe.  He sent His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to explain everything to you.  To hear what He has to say read the Gospels.  Read in your Bible to learn what you believe and why you believe it.  Only then can you own your faith.  Only then can you share your faith.

Share And Be Judged

Achilleion Palace, Corfu, Greece, 2012- former home of Empress Elizabeth of Austria (taken my Martha Wiggins)

“Observing the self-assurance of Peter and John, and realizing that the speakers were uneducated men of no standing, the questioners were amazed.  Then they recognized these men as having been with Jesus.”  Acts 4:13

Peter and John, two of the most beloved disciples of Jesus, carried His message to many.  They did so with great enthusiasm and conviction.

In doing so, they were judged by others.  Some judged them to be righteous men bearing witness to Truth, and thereby became believers in Jesus.  Others deemed them to be madmen, or fanatics, and made a point of steering clear of them lest they be judged like them.

And, there were those who felt threatened by the power of such men and their ability to draw others to them.  These men, who’s own power was at stake, would confront Peter and John, trying to intimidate them, to silence their message.  These were the high priests, the elders, the men with the power of governing.  They had Peter and John arrested and brought before them in an attempt to discredit them among the people.

Their plan, however, backfired.  Instead of stifling them, they found themselves dumbfounded.  These two unschooled, average guys had an answer for everything, which is usually the case when a person wholeheartedly believes in everything they are saying, when they have the Truth on their side.  Realizing their mistake, the high priests issued an order that under no circumstances were Peter and John “to speak the name of Jesus or teach about Him.” (Acts 4:18)

Peter and John had an answer for that too.  “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight for us to obey you rather than God.  Surely we cannot help speaking of what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20)

God often uses ordinary men and women to accomplish great things.  In fact, most of the Saints were ordinary average people who suffered from the same doubts, failures, and struggles as every other human being of their time.  When we have seen, heard, and felt the loving mercy and forgiveness of Jesus; when we have been rescued from our sins, and given the grace of Eternal Life with Him, how can we not help but speak about all we have seen and heard?

Most of us are just ordinary men and women who long to be faithful believers, faithful servants.  Most of us are willing to share Him, but many are unsure as to how.  We don’t have to be highly educated, or in a position of power to do so.  All we have to do is share with others how He has worked in our own lives, how He has made us whole.  In doing so, we may be judged by others as being overly religious, or as being fanatics.  Some, however, will judge us as righteous witnesses to the Truth, and thereby also become believers in Jesus.  Yes, we will be judged by others, but we will also be judged by God.

Share all that you have seen and heard; bear witness; be judged, and share in the grace of Life Eternal.

Signs and Symbols

One of the Stations of The Cross inside the Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 2011, taken by Martha Wiggins

“Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a headband.”  Deuteronomy 11:18

Signs and symbols are everywhere.  They are part of our everyday lives.  We see Stop signs, No Smoking signs, and Street signs.  We use Dollar signs, Plus signs, Thumbs up and Thumbs down signs.  They help us communicate, clarify, and direct us.  They serve as reminders to do something, not to do something, or to stop doing something.  Signs and symbols have meaning for us.

In the Beble verse above, God tells us to use His Words as a sign, as a reminder.  He says to fasten them on our hands and on our foreheads so they will be ever there, at the forefront of our thoughts.  He is giving us a way to succeed by having a constant reminder right in front of us.

Then in the following Gospel He tells us this, “Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock.  Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock.  But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand.  Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!”  (Matthew 7:24-27)

We should take Him at His Word.  He clearly spells out for us what He expects from us and even gives us ways and help to succeed.  We can choose our signs and symbols.  I often wear a Sacred Heart Medal, or a Crucifix necklace.  I have Sacred images such as Jesus on The Cross, or Mary, stuck in the sun visor above my head in the car.  I listen to inspiring spiritual CDs while driving.  I also have beautiful artwork of Jesus in my home.  I try to surround myself with the signs and symbols of my faith.  I am striving to have His Word before me as a constant reminder.  I am striving to succeed, for I do not want to live in that house about which He said, “and what a fall it had!”

His Word Is Constant

Interior of the Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 2011, taken by Martha Wiggins

Interior of the Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 2011, taken by Martha Wiggins

“The word of Yahweh is straightforward, all he does springs from his constancy.  He loves uprightness and justice; the faithful love of Yahweh fills the earth.”  Psalm 33:4-5

We have His Word.  With it we have a blueprint, an example, to live out our life on earth so that we may live in Life Eternal.  His Word is straightforward, His Word is constant.

As we pass through life we find ourselves in many different circumstances, in many fluctuating moods, and with ever changing goals.  We change, others change, life changes, the world changes, but God doesn’t change.  God is constant.

To be constant is to be continual, on-going.  To be constant is to remain faithful.  God is faithful in His characteristics of uprightness and justice.  He is faithful in His love.  As stated above, it fills the earth.

I lean heavily on the fact that in this ever changing, fickle world God is constant.  I know, that while the world changes, His Word never changes.  “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)  I know that when I consult His Word, I will find consistent, unwavering answers to all of my questions, to all of my problems.  I know the more I spend time in His Word, the more I live in His Word, the straighter my path becomes, the more assured I am of achieving my ultimate goal of Eternal Life.

Because I am constantly changing, my path is a curvy, wavy line weaving over and under a straight line, a constant course laid out before me in faithful love by a God who is upright and just, a God whose Word is constant.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.  I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.”  (Psalm 119:105-106)
