“Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a headband.” Deuteronomy 11:18
Signs and symbols are everywhere. They are part of our everyday lives. We see Stop signs, No Smoking signs, and Street signs. We use Dollar signs, Plus signs, Thumbs up and Thumbs down signs. They help us communicate, clarify, and direct us. They serve as reminders to do something, not to do something, or to stop doing something. Signs and symbols have meaning for us.
In the Beble verse above, God tells us to use His Words as a sign, as a reminder. He says to fasten them on our hands and on our foreheads so they will be ever there, at the forefront of our thoughts. He is giving us a way to succeed by having a constant reminder right in front of us.
Then in the following Gospel He tells us this, “Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!” (Matthew 7:24-27)
We should take Him at His Word. He clearly spells out for us what He expects from us and even gives us ways and help to succeed. We can choose our signs and symbols. I often wear a Sacred Heart Medal, or a Crucifix necklace. I have Sacred images such as Jesus on The Cross, or Mary, stuck in the sun visor above my head in the car. I listen to inspiring spiritual CDs while driving. I also have beautiful artwork of Jesus in my home. I try to surround myself with the signs and symbols of my faith. I am striving to have His Word before me as a constant reminder. I am striving to succeed, for I do not want to live in that house about which He said, “and what a fall it had!”
