Lord, You Are My Future

140px-Jesus_is_taken_down_from_the_Cross_002Lord, You are my future.

Forgive me, Lord, when I no longer look forward toward the future, but instead dwell in the past or the problems of the here and now.  Forgive me, Lord, when I let complacency set in accepting the status quo rather than preparing for my future with You.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift and grace of hope to sustain me, to keep me ever turning toward the future, toward You.  Thanking you, Lord, for nudging me when necessary.

It is often easy to let complacency set in, to sit right where we are with little or no effort to change things for the better.  Jesus nudges us forward, sometimes with little tugs at our heart or an idea that just won’t go away.  Sometimes He has to hit us over the head to move us forward, such as a calamity or desperate situation.  Pay attention to the nudges so you don’t have to be hit over the head!  He won’t lead you anywhere but to Him.  He is your future.

Praying Earnestly

holy-spirit_2889073“Oh Lord, hear me praying; listen to my plea, Oh God my King, for I will never pray to anyone but You.  Each morning I will look to You in heaven and lay my requests before You praying earnestly.”  Psalm 5:1-3

I write the above verses from Psalm 5 in the front cover of each new daily prayer journal I begin.  I also write each one of the Bible versus I assigned to my children when they were younger.  At the start of each journal I revise and write my list of ‘permanent’ prayer offerings.  This list includes all those things I pray for repeatedly on a daily basis.  And, I include the following prayer for all:  ‘O Lord, Keep us all safe and free from all evil; guide us each in what is ours to do.”

I share these things because, for me, it is all  part of my earnest prayer.  It takes time to write all of it down in each new journal.  I don’t read the entire prayer list everyday because I pray for those concerns and situations that are most in need that day, but occasionally when I am tight on time, I lift the entire list up by saying, “for all those intentions I pray for daily.”  The Holy Spirit knows my heart and lifts them up for me.

Praying earnestly involves our thoughts, our needs, our hopes, and our dreams.  It involves praying for the needs of not just ourselves, but for others, such as our families, our friends, our nation, and the world.  Praying earnestly means honest sharing of all our concerns.  It means praying even for people and things that may be difficult to pray for because we have been hurt, forgotten, or deceived.  We share with God our difficulty in praying for these things and ask His Holy Spirit to make our prayers complete wherever they are lacking.  God looks into our heart while He listens to our prayers.  He accepts nothing less than earnest prayer.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does have to be honest.

Begin and end each day by looking to Him in heaven and lay your requests before Him in earnest prayer.

His Everlasting Arms

Jesus on the Cross“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!”  Deuteronomy 33:27

Each one of us has experienced low points in our lives.  They are the times when we have felt helpless, abandoned, weakened, or desperate.  They are the times when we have no where to turn or no one to turn to.

I have a daily devotional that I dearly love, entitled God Calling  by A.J. Russell.  One of the entries (January 21st) reads in part, “Be glad all the time.  Rejoice exceedingly.  Joy in Me.  Rest in Me.  Never be afraid.  Pray more.  Do not get worried.  I am they Helper.”  It is not so easy to rejoice in difficulties, or to be glad when desperate, is it?  How can one never be afraid?  Never worry?  As human beings we are bound to be fearful and worried at the low points in our lives.  Jesus know this.  His answer is to change our focus from one of fear, worry, weakness, helplessness, or abandonment to one of prayer.  At that very moment when we are at our lowest, He tells us to pray more.  The excerpt from God Calling goes on to say,  “Underneath are the Everlasting Arms.  You cannot get below that.  Rest in them, as a tired child rests.”  So, when we are at our lowest, below us are His Everlasting Arms.  We can go no lower.  It is in His Everlasting Arms we find respite, we find ourselves whole again.  It is in His Everlasting Arms we are lifted out of the depths, out of the pit, and uplifted into Life Eternal.

If you are now at a low point in your life, seek out His Everlasting Arms.  They are your refuge.  They are right below you waiting to catch you …waiting to lift you up.

Struggle For Control

Taken in Vatican Museum, 2012, by Martha Wiggins

Often, when I try to enter into Stillness before God, I find my thoughts wandering.  I am present physically, but not totally present mentally.  The desire is there, but the willpower is lacking.  At times like these I struggle for control with myself, my thoughts, and the world.  In reality, my struggle is ultimately with the devil, who desires nothing less than to stop my relationship with Jesus.  He seeks to intervene in any way possible and looks for any crack to worm through in order to accomplish his mission.  He desires to have control over me.  If I give up the struggle, the devil wins.

At times like these I stop and pray:  “Lord, still my mind along with my body.  Help my focus to be only on You.  You are the most important part of my life, and yet, I let other life-thoughts continue to rob me of You.  Center me, Lord, in all that is You.” (Journey Through The Stillness, August 9, 2011)

Lord, You Are The Answer

Lord, You are the Answer.

Forgive me, Lord, when I think I have all the answers, or when I look away from You to seek them.

Thank you, Lord, for your Word that I might find the answers to every question.  Thank you for your Word, Lord, as a lamp unto my feet.

Too Busy?

“You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings.”  Deuteronomy 15:10

Sometimes I get so busy that I lose myself.  I begin to wonder why I am not functioning at my very best level.  My thoughts become muddled, my ability to concentrate seems to fly out the window.  At times like these I know I need to take control of and reorder my life.  I must take stock of what things are most important, what things must be accomplished and in what order.  And the first order of business is prayer.

When I step back and look at what I am busy about I realize that there are certain things that can be let go, but prayer is never one of them.  If I begin to cut back on prayer time it seems that chaos begins to rule.  When I refocus and look to God for direction, order begins to rule, Divine Order.

Here is a little prayer I recently came across that even the busiest of us can appreciate!  “Oh Lord,  You know how busy I must be this day:  If I forget You,  Do not You forget me.”  (Prayer of Sir Jacob Astley before the battle of Edgehill)

Lord, You Are Light

800px-Sun_and_Clouds_001Lord, You are Light.

Forgive me, Lord, when I ignore the path you light before me, and instead, retreat or hide in the dark.

Thank you, Lord, for your Light to illuminate my way making known what is right and good.

Sometimes He lights our way so brilliantly and still we ignore Him choosing another path, one through total darkness.  Let His Light shine before you on your path, and then through you on all others.

Come Holy Spirit

sun-rise_21324306 - Send forth Your Spirit“Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  Matthew 6:10

Come, Holy Spirit.

Fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love.  Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth.

O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations.

Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Imagine the entire earth aglow, awashed in the Holy Spirit, the face of the earth renewed.  Imagine every individual aglow, awashed in the Holy Spirit, His Light radiating out from each face.  The earth infused with the Holy Spirit is the earth at peace.

Take a few moments to reflect on how we can each renew the earth through that same Holy Spirit.  It can truly begin in each one of us.  We can renew our own little corner of the world and watch as it spreads to every corner.  Begin each day with prayer, journey forth with a smile, and end each day with reflection and prayer.

Let His Holy Spirit come and kindle in us the fire of His Love!

A Reminder About Control

Basilica Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome, Italy, (Basilica of St. Mary over Minerva) taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011

Basilica Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome, Italy, (Basilica of St. Mary over Minerva) taken by Martha Wiggins, 2011. Saint Catherine of Siena is buried beneath the altar, and to the left is a statue carved by Michelangelo -Christ Bearing The Cross.

“Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.” 2 Peter 1:12-14

As changes have ocurred in my life, I have often had to make adjustments in my daily routine.  I have also often had to work hard at carving out the time I need to connect in spirit to Jesus each day, and at times have found it difficult to maintain the focus needed to do so.  He never disappoints me in His response to my efforts and always rewards me.  I have come to know that I am His unfinished work of art, which He chisels and carves on ever so tenderly.  As long as I remember to relinquish control to Him, I am ever secure in the knowledge that Jesus has my back!

Today, as a reminder to myself and to all, I am sharing an entry from 2010 in Journey Through The Stillness, my personal spiritual journal. It reminds me that there will always be times when I need to refocus, but it also reminds me of exactly what must be done to gain that focus –relinquish control –and just exactly what my relationship with Jesus can be when I do so.

Journey Through The Stillness, October 25, 2010 – “Ah, well done, my child. Of late your actual entrance into The Stillness has become just that, a routine, a means to an end. It is wise that you recognize this and do not let it be so. I am your Lord. When you say, ‘for You are God’, remember exactly what this means. Relinquish control anew each and every time you enter The Stillness. It is not something to be rushed through. It must be honest; real; intimate. It is between servant and Master, created and Creator. And then, remember it is between beloved and Lover, breath and Life. Never take this for granted, but know it is ever there for the asking. Ask and ye shall receive.”

Prayer: My Lord, and My God, I lay my life before you. I consecrate to You my heart, body, and soul. I am thine and thine I wish to be. Therefore, I will fear nothing; for evil cannot conquer, cannot overcome, those that live in and through You, My Lord, and My God. Amen

Come, Lord, Come.

422px-Ecce_Homo_(Joan_de_Joanes)_-_0507Come Lord, Jesus Christ.  Come spiritually into my heart.

Through your grace purify it.  Sanctify it.  Through that same grace, O Lord, grant me humility and meekness of heart.  Grant me strengthened faith and an unlimited capacity for love.

And then, most gracious Lord, grant me both the desire and the courage to live out my faith according to your will.

Come Lord, Jesus Christ.  Come spiritually into my heart.
