Today is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. The beautiful prayer below was not actually written by Saint Francis. It was first published in 1912 in a French Catholic spiritual publication. Around 1920, a French Franciscan priest had the prayer imprinted on the back of an image of Saint Francis and entitled it “A Prayer For Peace.” It is known and loved worldwide. Our world and our nation are much in need of our prayers.
World peace begins in the heart of each and every one of us. In honor of our beloved Saint Francis, let us pray:
Lord make me
an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred,
Let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, Joy.
O Divine Master grant that I may
Not so much seek to be consoled
As to console;
To be understood,
As to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it is in dying that we are
Born to eternal life.
